The newest stated mission of one of those giant social networking websites is to "give people the power to share and make the world more open and connected." How did the planet connect, before? The same way we do now: through media. Media is shared with substantial numbers of individuals, and usually relies on technology for its own generation and distribution. Originally, you had to stride by the ideal cavern wall to get your daily digest - cave paintings are a good illustration of just one of the first forms of media. Afterward, the alphabet gave new significance to the static pictures we had relied upon. Later on, the creation of the Gutenberg Press revolutionized media by making it feasible to generate the alphabet and stamped pictures for the masses. The improvement of mass printing enabled newspapers and pamphlets to be a primary media manner.

Input: junk mail. Soon, the phonograph allowed audio recordings. Photographs added more than mere sketches into the pages of the newspapers. Radio came along and revolutionized media in a matter of audible seconds. Movie theatres allowed the press revolution of video transmission (no wonder we love them). Television added yet another new visual dimension to family media. Seeing world events in the comfort of the armchairs kept us more connected then ever before.

Then, naturally, comes the business pc for media storage, the video player that enabled us to share videos, the walkman that allowed us to stylishly share music on-the-go, the electronic cameras that enabled us to share hundreds of photographs, plus much more. Soon after, followed the consumer and individual computers that enabled the social media boom of current moment. We are still preserving and transmitting visual and audio media like we did back in the day, but, with the aid of current electronic equipment, we are doing so much more quickly and with incredible quality and amount.
Multimedia combined the various forms to present us with an entirely new kind of communication. This evolution has taken us beyond our regular media modes, and enabled us to control a multimedia experience for social discussion.

Another sort of social networking continues to evolve, and sweep us along with the evolution. Now, we can know more about current events than we ever wished to, in real-time, and discuss it across oceans and continents. We can share the online freedom of speech with communities which otherwise may not experience that privilege. We can associate with remote family, or find aid in an immediate message that they're safe on the opposite side of earth. Even if we consider just these benefits, we're much better off compared to the caveman.
